Scott Brown

CEO and Managing Partner

Scott Brown, CEO and Managing Partner, founded NEC in 2004 and has served as its CEO, overseeing all aspects of company formation, deal origination, execution, and management. Earlier in his career, Scott served as the founding Executive Vice President at Solar Cells, Inc. (now First Solar), the President of Glasstech Solar, Inc. (a manufacturer of semiconductor equipment for the solar industry), and consultant to venture capital firms and state agencies on renewable technologies and markets. From 1998-2005, Scott was a member of the Advisory Council of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy. Prior to his career in the renewable energy industry, Scott was a consultant at Bain & Company. Scott is a graduate of Dartmouth College (BA in Mathematics and Russian Studies) and Harvard Law School (JD).

Patrick Fox

Managing Partner

Patrick Fox, Managing Partner, is responsible for deal origination, evaluation, structuring, and execution. Patrick has a decade of experience in energy and finance. Prior to joining New Energy Capital, Patrick was a Director in the origination and project finance group at Hannon Armstrong Capital, where he led and participated in over $250 million of project financings, primarily for solar and wind energy projects. Before Hannon Armstrong Capital, Patrick was a Principal at Pacific Gas and Electric Company where he negotiated, structured, and executed over $2 billion in power purchase agreements (PPAs). He began his civilian career at Merrill Lynch in the Debt Capital Markets group. His experience includes transactions in solar PV, solar thermal, geothermal, wind, biomass, and renewable energy credits (REC). Prior to his career in energy, Patrick was a U.S. Air Force Pilot where he served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Patrick is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy (BS in Economics) and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College (MBA).

Curt Whittaker

Managing Partner

Curt Whittaker, Managing Partner, has spent over 30 years in the renewable energy industry as legal counsel to developers, investors, and lenders, working on landfill gas, wind, hydroelectric, solar, and biomass development projects. Curt has worked with the NEC investment team since 2004, serving as lead counsel on the majority of NEC’s investment activities related to biomass, bio-materials, hydroelectric, landfill gas, and solar development. While serving as general counsel for NEC, Curt is also a senior partner and head of the Energy Practice at Rath, Young & Pignatelli in Concord, NH. Prior to working with Rath, Young & Pignatelli, Curt was a member of the Energy Practice at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, California. Curt’s legal practice spans all aspects of the development and financing of renewable generation facilities in the United States and Canada, from site acquisition through EPC negotiations to construction and term financing. Curt is a graduate of the College of William & Mary (BA in Economics) and Harvard Law School (JD).

Tom Naughton

CFO and Director of Investor Relations

Tom Naughton, CFO and Director of Investor Relations, is responsible for overseeing the financial management and execution of transactions as well as investor relations and regulatory compliance. Tom was previously an Adjunct Associate Professor and the Executive Director of the Center for Private Equity & Entrepreneurship at the Tuck School of Business. Prior to Tuck, Tom was Managing Director and Founder of NeoCarta Ventures, an early stage venture capital firm. Before forming NeoCarta, Tom was Vice President at GE Equity, the private equity arm of General Electric and GE Capital. Tom is also a member of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation Impact Investment Committee. Tom is a graduate of Dartmouth College (BA in Mathematics) and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College (MBA).

Bennett Collier

Partner

Bennett Collier, Vice President and Principal, is primarily responsible for portfolio asset management, as well as investment evaluation and execution. Prior to joining NEC, Bennett developed power assets at Terra-Gen Power. At Terra-Gen, he managed activities including real estate acquisition, permitting, engineering, interconnection, and power marketing for multiple investments, including the 1,300 megawatt Alta Wind Energy Center in Kern County, California, as well as geothermal power projects in Nevada and California. Before Terra-Gen, Bennett spent six years in the engineering and operations organizations at Pratt & Whitney as a project and design engineer for gas turbine hardware and a manufacturing supervisor managing assembly of multiple gas turbine engine families. Bennett is a graduate of Clarkson University (BS in Mechanical Engineering), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (MS in Mechanical Engineering), and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College (MBA).

Ian Marcus

Partner

Ian Marcus, Vice President and Principal, is responsible for deal origination, evaluation, structuring, and execution. Prior to joining NEC, Ian was a Vice President at Morgan Stanley & Co. on the Solar Desk within its Commodities Division. While at Morgan Stanley, Ian principally invested in solar projects in the residential, commercial, community, and utility sectors. Prior to his tenure at Morgan Stanley, Ian worked in project finance in the Residential and Small Commercial business unit at SunEdison. Before SunEdison, Ian worked on project and corporate analysis at Solar Power Partners. Ian started his career within the Cleantech Group at GCA Savvian Advisors focusing on mergers and acquisitions advisory and private placements. Ian is a graduate of Dartmouth College (BA in Economics).

Jeph Shaw

Vice President and Principal

Jeph Shaw, Vice President and Principal, is responsible for deal origination, evaluation, structuring, and execution. Jeph first joined NEC as an Associate in 2010 and departed in 2013 to pursue an MBA at the Tuck School at Dartmouth College. While at Tuck he served as Co-President of the Dartmouth Energy Collaborative and a Revers Energy Initiative Fellow. After Tuck, Jeph joined SunEdison’s Management Leadership Development Program, where he focused on corporate finance and treasury at the TerraForm Power and TerraForm Global affiliates. Jeph returned to NEC in 2016. Earlier in his career, Jeph was an investment banking analyst focused on mergers and acquisitions advisory with TM Capital. Jeph is a graduate of Tufts University (BA in Economics and Philosophy) and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College (MBA).

Brad Heshmaty

Senior Associate

Brad Heshmaty, Senior Associate, is responsible for financial modeling, valuation, and investment and industry diligence. Prior to joining NEC in 2017, Brad was an Analyst in the Global Power, Energy & Infrastructure Group at Lazard in New York. While at Lazard, he worked on a variety of transactions in the power, energy, and infrastructure sectors, including strategic advisory and merger and acquisition assignments totaling over $35 billion in aggregate transaction value. Brad is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (BS in Business Administration).

Mark Reid

Senior Associate

Mark Reid, Associate, is responsible for financial modeling, valuation, and investment and industry diligence. Prior to joining NEC in 2016, Mark was an Investment Banking Analyst within the Global Energy Group at Credit Suisse in New York. While at Credit Suisse, he worked on mergers and acquisitions and financings for Power, Utilities, and Renewables firms. Mark is a graduate from the University of Chicago (BA in Political Science).

Aashna Mehra

Associate

Aashna Mehra, Associate, is responsible for financial modeling, valuation, and investment and industry diligence. Prior to joining NEC in 2019, she was an Investment Analyst at Greenbacker Capital, a leading long-term owner and operator of sustainable infrastructure assets, and interned in Barclays Capital’s Investment Banking Division. She has also worked as a Legislative Assistant to the former Union Power Minister of India, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia. Aashna graduated with a BSE in Mechanical Engineering cum laude from Princeton University and received her MBA from the Yale School of Management.

Brando de Metz

Associate

Brando de Metz, Associate, is responsible for financial modeling, valuation, and investment and industry diligence. Prior to joining NEC, Brando was a Corporate M&A Associate at ReneSola Power Holdings. While at ReneSola, Brando focused on the acquisition and sale of renewable energy projects in the North American solar sector. Previously, Brando worked as an Analyst at Onyx Renewable Partners. Brando began his career as an Analyst at Goldman Sachs and holds an A.B. in Philosophy from Columbia College.

Po Cheng

Portfolio Investment Manager

Po Cheng, Portfolio Investment Manager, tracks and manages key aspects of multiple portfolio investments and relationships. Prior to joining NEC, Po was a key member of the Investment and Business Development team at Eversource Energy where he was responsible for evaluating emerging industry trends and potential investments. Po has worked in the electric utility and power sectors for more than twenty years and has deep buy-side investment experience as a long/short utility hedge fund portfolio manager and analyst. Po is a CFA® charterholder and is a graduate of Rutgers College (BA in Economics) and Rutgers Business School (MBA).

Alex Hall

Portfolio Administrator

Alex Hall, Portfolio Administrator, is primarily responsible for portfolio asset management. Prior to joining NEC, Alex was a Data & Systems Analyst for Holderness School in their Advancement Office where he oversaw the data integrity, collection, and entry for their relationship management database. Alex has also worked at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center as a Software Analyst and worked on the implementation and maintenance of their electronic medical records software to comply with federal guidelines. Alex is a graduate of Dartmouth College (BA in Psychology).

Tawnya Stark

Office Administrator

Tawnya Stark, Office Administrator, manages New Energy Capital’s internal finance, human resources, and office administration. Previously, Tawnya worked for 10 years at Centurion Insurance Group as a commercial account manager, where she handled commercial policy applications, renewals, and policy audits. Tawnya has also worked as a marketing specialist for Millard Group, a New Hampshire marketing, list brokerage, and list management company, and a client specialist for Granite Bank. Tawnya is a graduate of the University of Vermont (BS in Business Administration).
